With the holidays upon us, you may find yourself overindulging in sweet treats and festive drinks. It's okay to give yourself a break! Moderating your enjoyment of alcohol during this time of year has several benefits.
Here are three benefits to consider limiting your alcohol consumption this holiday season!
1. Alcohol dries out our mouth
Drink more water! Alcohol is a diuretic which means it causes the body to produce more urine, which can lead to dehydration. When the body is dehydrated saliva production is reduced which can cause dry mouth (also known as xerostomia). When our mouth is dehydrated, it allows oral bacteria to grow and cause damage to our teeth. Other symptoms of dry mouth include difficulty chewing and swallowing, an increase in plaque buildup, tooth decay, and cracked lips.
2. Alcohol weakens enamel
Beer, red wine, white wine, and cider all contain acid that will slowly dissolve enamel. With less enamel to protect the teeth, there is an increased risk of experiencing tooth sensitivity and pain. Alcohol, especially when mixed with sugary additives, coats the surface of teeth and can lead to tooth decay.
3. Alcohol weakens the gums
A weakened immune system means the body will have more difficulty fighting off infections, including gum disease. According to the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, alcohol use does not strengthen the immune system or increase resistance to illness.
The Journal of Periodontology found that consumption of alcoholic beverages can have adverse effects on the health of a person’s gums. These effects include an increased likelihood of inflammation and gums that bled after brushing.
Tips to reduce the effects of Alcohol
The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, recommends no more than two drinks per week to reduce the likelihood of developing alcohol-related health problems. If you enjoy alcohol, sip a glass of water in between drinks to replenish your saliva and minimize alcohol’s dehydration effect. Your mouth will thank you if you also brush, floss, or use mouthwash after drinking alcohol (or any sugary beverage).
Accessive alcohol can lead to health problems for your entire body. Limiting alcohol consumption to a couple of drinks a week while maintaining consistent oral hygiene reduces damage to your teeth and gums. And a small change can make a big difference.
