Temporomandibular joint diseases and disorders are typified by pain in the jaw and surrounding tissues, as well as limitations in jaw movements. Injury and conditions that routinely affect other joints in the body may also affect the temporomandibular joint.
The temporomandibular joint is responsible for opening and closing of the jaw, mastication, balance, and many other fine and complicated functions. Temporomandibular dysfunction can present itself in various ways, including pain, difficulty opening mouth, night grinding and day clenching.
Other symptoms include:
- Being unable to open the mouth comfortably
- A bite that feels uncomfortable or “off”
- Swelling on the side of the face
- Clicking, popping or grating sounds in the jaw joint
- Locking of the jaw when attempting to open the mouth
- Headaches
- Neck, shoulder and back pain
Treatment can be complicated and requires a thorough and proper diagnosis. A full examination and evaluation of the problem is the first step to improving function and relieving pain.
